Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Athletic Training Residency program recently received the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE), making it one of just five accredited programs in the country.
The residency program, which began in 2014 and has already graduated 18 residents, advances the knowledge of athletic training practitioners through comprehensive clinical and didactic education. An evidence-based approach is utilized to enhance the evaluation, treatment and sports-specific return to play of injured athletes, with a focus on the secondary school setting. The curriculum has a heavy emphasis on clinical reasoning, manual therapy and appropriate exercise selection, and is taught in conjunction with our orthopedic and sports physical therapy residency programs.
The goal of our athletic training residency is to create community leaders and provide advanced orthopedic rehabilitation to our high school youth. Our athletic training residents have a unique experience working and learning from sports medicine practitioners during each facet of the orthopedic rehabilitation process, thus promoting inter-professional collaboration.
We will be accepting applications for our 2017-2018 program beginning December 1, 2016. For more information please visit our website at houstonmethodist.org/pt-education or email our Program Director, Marie Charpentier, PT, DPT, OCS, SCS, FAAOMPT, ATC, LAT, at mtcharpentier@houstonmethodist.org.
