Council Connections – May

At HMSL, we have many councils who are each focusing on various topics to make our hospital a great place for patients as well as employees. 

To raise awareness and disseminate information from these councils, there will be a monthly update called Council Connections. 

Wound Care Council

Mentor: Ann Maguire
Chair: Rose Joseph
Co-Chair: Honey Ignatius

  • Hosted the 7th annual Wound Care Conference on April 20 with approximately 125 attendees including members from the community
  • We continue to perform monthly PUPP audits to identify the prevalence of HAPI’s. (Next PUPP audit is May 10, 2018)
  • Implementing a turning clock to cue patient repositioning for pressure injury prevention
  • More focus on preventive wound care per established protocols

Infection Prevention Council

Mentor: Andrea Dalcour-Cotton
Chair: Cara Bretz

  • There will be a PCA boot camp offered in May and June that will cover Foley catheters, I&Os, nutrition and yogurt consumption. Keep a look out for a flyer soon that will have dates and instructions where to sign up
  • Please remember to use Hibacleanse for patients with central lines, Foley catheters, and prior to any procedures. This will help reduce CAUTIs, CLABSIs, and surgical site infections

Professional Development Council

Mentor: Tricia Lewis
Chair: Fiona Smith
Co-Chair: Irene Smith

  • All RNs are asked to update their nursing census with re/certification and degrees and provide their manager a copy of their certification or diploma
  • All staff are encouraged to complete the Monthly CE Direct module
  • PALS/Shining Star Award- be thinking of a nominee in your area

Advanced Nursing Practice Council

Mentor & Chair: Maureen Lall

  • Ann Maguire, Emilyn Rodriguez and Kelly Ward presented posters at the 1st Annual Nursing Science at the Bedside Conference on April 13, 2018. The conference was hosted by the Texas Medical Center Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council
  • Maureen Lall and Mary Harris represented HMSL at the International Leadership of Texas Health Fair on April 21, 2018

Journal/Education Club

Mentor: Emilyn Rodriguez
Chair: Shermel Edwards Maddox

  • Interprofessional guest speakers present every quarter on a topic that addresses improving patient care and safety
  • July 2018 we will have Yasir Nabi from Respiratory Therapy presenting
  • We are looking for participants to help with the post-code pause project. Please email sedwardsmaddox@houstonmethodist.org if you are interested!

Magnet Champions

Mentor: Mary Harris
Chair: Karen Cothran
Co-Chair: Julie Pickle

  • The Magnet champions began a four-month book study on “How to Win Friends and Influence People”
  • Magnet champions are encouraged to invite a Magnet Champion Meeting Crasher to the monthly meetings. If you would like to crash a Magnet Champion meeting, please attend the meeting on May 16, 8– 9 a.m. in Brazos BC

Updated Policies

  • NU330 Care of Patient’s Valuables and Personal Belongings: Revised and updated to current practice. Practice Change: When a patient is admitted, nursing will advise patient to send all valuables home. If patient refuses, patient valuables will be recorded upon admission. Complete Patient’s valuables record. Call security to store valuables in the hospital safe. If patient refuses to remove valuables from the room and store in the safe, Patient belongings may be kept in the room and should be documented on the Patient Belongings Inventory list
  • NU291 Patient Admission Guidelines for Med Surg: Revised and updated to current practice change.
    Practice Change: Patients on intermittent BiPAP/CPAP tolerates periods “off” NPPV (greater than or equal to 2 hours). The exception would be comfort care (DNR/DNI/hospice patients). All suicidal patients will be placed in ICU only for risk related issue
  • NU216 Central Venous Catheter Tip Specimen for Culture: Policy archived
    Practice Change: We no longer can send catheter tips for culture. The best practice is to send blood cultures

  • PCPS012 Approved medical Record abbreviations: Nomenclature and documentation language were updated
  • NU403 Professional Development Support for Nursing: Policy NU 111 archived. NU 403 updated to current practice
  • PCPS033 Medically inappropriate decisions about life sustaining treatment: Documentation language updated
  • IC107 Patient Food and Medication Refrigerators: All refrigerators should be clearly marked and separated. There should be documentation after maintenance
  • PCPS 024 Reportable Cases to Outside Agencies: Documentation language updated
  • AD007 Visitors: Updated references
  • IC107 Medication Warmer: Archived policy
