Noelle Mayor, RN, of Surgical-ICU was honored as the hospital’s DAISY Award winner for the fourth quarter of 2016. She was nominated by several patients, who noted her caring manner and ability to make them feel special.
Mayor’s unique approach made a significant impact on one patient’s wife, who was uncertain about bringing her young daughter to the hospital while her husband was in an induced coma.
“I was trying to decide whether or not to bring our daughter to see her daddy,” the patient’s wife recalled in her nomination. “I asked Noelle if she had any advice, and she said she could do certain things to make it less scary for her.
When she came in the next day, Noelle wore her superhero scrubs and let my daughter listen to her daddy’s heartbeat. She truly made it a less frightening experience for all of us and helped me prepare my daughter for seeing her daddy in a pretty scary state.”
Another patient said Mayor’s communication made all the difference for him and his wife.
“She took care of us. She smiled at us, attended to us and carefully communicated with us through each step,” the patient wrote. “I have never felt so special. I will always tell people about the quality of care I received.”
In honor of her DAISY Award selection, Mayor received a certificate of appreciation, a reserved parking spot, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe.
“Noelle’s ability to connect with others is a perfect example of the genuine relationships between nurses and patients that the DAISY Award recognizes,” said Janet Leatherwood, CNO. “She is able to relate to her patients and provide care according to their needs, and it really makes a difference in their lives as well as in the lives of their family members.”
