Carlos Jones, staff chaplain, and Penny Parish, RN II, surgery, were honored for their extraordinary compassion and dedication to their roles both inside and outside the hospital.
Carlos was nominated for his willingness to go above and beyond for a patient’s family during their loved one’s hospital stay. “The patient’s son was very moved by the conversation and comfort that Carlos provided him,” a coworker wrote. When the patient passed away, her son did not know any pastors and thought of Carlos while planning the funeral. “Carlos showed up on the day of the service and spent the morning talking to family and friends, and he delivered the most beautiful and heartfelt service. He used the stories and anecdotes so beautifully a friend thought Carlos had known the family for 30 years.” The patient’s son said he could not have asked for a better sense of closure than what Carlos provided for him and his family.
Penny was nominated for her integrity, respect and compassion in interactions with her colleagues and patients. “There is a story that I feel especially demonstrates Penny’s compassion and respect,” a coworker wrote. “When a patient arrived for emergency surgery, Penny realized that it was the patient’s birthday. Later that day, she visited the patient with a birthday card and chocolates. It showed the patient how much she truly cared for her.” Her coworkers say she has a commitment to excellence and a dedication to her profession, pursuing higher education and advancing her professional goals while balancing her personal and professional responsibilities.
