October 16, 2017: We will focus on the experiences and knowledge our staff gained at the 2017 Magnet conference over the next few weeks.
Robin Smith, BSN, RN, CMSRN, Brazos 5
I attended the “Well You” session that focused on wellness in multiple areas, e.g. stress management, hydration, healthy eating, exercise, relaxation, laughter, and relationships. These are incorporated in a program to promote employee wellness and avoid burnout. They had many good ideas for promoting employee wellness including wellness champions for departments and “wellness Wednesday” to focus on a topic each week to promote health and wellness.
HMSL has a wellness program but I don’t know if RNs on our unit take advantage of our program. I feel like we can promote it on a unit level by bathroom corner wellness tips, inviting the health coaches to a unit staff meeting for tips on quick relaxation techniques to incorporate into the day, and/or adding “meme” for a short humor relief break. We all need encouragement to be healthy!
Mary Harris:
I appreciated the opening session by Jonathan Godfrey. Godfrey is a life flight nurse whose helicopter crashed, leaving two dead and him with severe injuries. Godfrey shared how this experience took him from victim to survivor to resilient. Godfrey’s advice when in a difficult situation is to Stop Think Observe Plan As health care providers we are faced with many difficult situations on a daily basis. Building resilience and gratitude keeps us healthy and able to care for our patients and families when they need us the most.
