October 2, 2017: How do you show up for your life each day? Do you do it in a powerful, intentional way or are you preoccupied and distracted. I recently read an interesting article by Linda Swindling, JD, CSP. Swindling claims that first impressions are made in 30 seconds or less. This means we have very little time to make a good first impression with our patients, their families and our co-workers. Here are some strategies and skills we can use to increase our confidence and improve our people skills:
- Smile and make eye contact
- Be polite and considerate and have a firm (but not too firm) handshake
- Help others feel comfortable and heard
- Consciously use positive body language, e.g. point your feet towards the person you are engaging with, lean in slightly towards the person speaking, hang your arms comfortably at your side, and nod your head in agreement
- Use proper grammar, spelling and language
- Respond to calls, emails and other communication in a timely manner
Each of these skills is aligned with our I CARE values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. I challenge you to live intentionally this week and focus on honing these skills with everyone you come into contact with. We can always be ready to make a good first impression.
