April 16, 2018 – Over the past 13 weeks we have explored the Forces of Magnetism and their impact on our organization. The fourteenth and final Force speaks to professional development. Professional development is part of orientation, in-service education, continuing education, formal education, and career development. Personal and professional growth is valued at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and is celebrated when our staff achieve a college degree, obtain a specialty certification or advance in the clinical career ladder. Opportunity to learn and grow is available through CE direct, classes offered by our education department, and classes and conferences offered by specialty organizations. I want HMSL to be identified as a learning organization, where we not only learn but teach others what we know. This year two abstracts were accepted at the American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Conference in Denver, Colorado. Sally Shen and I will give a podium presentation on the lessons we learned while eradicating hospital onset clostridium difficile and Ron Malit and Paschale Dorismond will provide a podium presentation about using aroma therapy to address nausea and vomiting in the post anesthesia care unit. These are just two examples of the many ways our staff are sharing their knowledge here at HMSL and all over the country.
