Mary Jo Pierce, RN, of OR Services was honored as the hospital’s DAISY Award winner for the first quarter of 2018.
Mary Jo was praised for the comfort and care she provides to families who are dealing with the stress and uncertainty of surgery.
“When she entered the room there was something about her that brought a peace over all of us,” wrote the nominator. “She and my son made a great connection. When she left the room my son looked at me and said, ‘Mom, she is such a wonderful nurse. She made me feel more comfortable knowing what is about to happen.’”
That nominator also stressed Mary Jo’s ongoing commitment to her patients, admiring her willingness to offer support and encouragement weeks after her son’s operation. “After he left the ICU, she came to visit him and would text daily to check on him,” she wrote. “We still keep in contact with her and it’s been three weeks since surgery.”
In honor of her DAISY Award selection, Mary Jo received a certificate of appreciation, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe.
“Mary Jo goes above and beyond to offer patients and their families unmatched care,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer. “She brings a personal, encouraging, calming approach to her work that makes a difference for our patients and their loved ones. We are proud to recognize her with this DAISY Award.”
