Join me in celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals week April 22–28, 2018. It is an annual celebration of the Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Technologists/Technicians, Laboratory Technicians, Phlebotomists, Histology Assistants, Pathologists in addition to other laboratory professionals who are a critical component in providing timely, and improving patient outcomes at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Since we often work behind the scenes, few understand the intricacies and complexity of our profession. The complexity starts and extends beyond proper patient identification, utilizing appropriate collection methods, sample preparation for testing, performing multiple quality controls for each test, on-going instrument maintenance, identifying quality/safety risks, transmission of test results, identifying abnormal cells, immediate communication of critical results, specimen receipt and processing, diagnosis diseases in addition to maintaining compliance with 500+ accreditation standard criteria and guidelines.
