Mary Harris is HMSL’s new Magnet Program Director, with responsibility for preparing the hospital’s application for Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She comes to Sugar Land from Houston Methodist Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
ANCC’s Magnet Recognition is one of the nation’s most prestigious and challenging accreditation programs. It recognizes health care organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. To date, only 433 hospitals worldwide have received the Magnet designation.
In her new role, Mary is leading a team that is preparing the required documentation that showcases examples of excellence for HMSL’s application in 2017.
“I love what I do because I get to interact every day with nurses and staff in just about every function throughout the hospital,” Mary says. “It’s exciting to learn about the great passion that our people have for providing excellent care and service to our patients and their families.”
As part of her role, Mary also works with a team of interprofessional Magnet champions across HMSL, sharing data, information and best practices to help drive continuing improvement.
“I try to visit every unit at least once a week to check in and say hello,” says Mary. “But I’m always available to answer questions or listen. I’m here to help.”
