Congratulations to Joe Thekkanath for receiving the MRI Safety Officer (MRSO) certification by the American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS). Currently, Joe is one of only two people in the Houston Methodist Hospital System that holds this official certification. Joe has attended two MRI safety trainings this year to stay on the cutting edge of safety for our department.
The ABMRS is built around the central principal that professionals trained in MRI safety represent the single greatest opportunity to reduce accidents and injuries in the MRI environment. The mission of ABMRS is to test and credential individuals for MRI safety knowledge and their ability to apply it.
“The magnetic resonance industry is now entering a new and long overdue era,” said ABMRS founder and chairperson, Emanuel Kanal, MD. The organization will offer a Magnetic Resonance Safety Certified™ (MRSC™) credential for three distinct positions, medical director/physician (MRMD), safety officer (MRSO), and safety expert (MRSE). Those who do pass their credentialing exam may then be identified as either MR physicians/medical directors, MR safety officers, or MR safety experts, followed by the initials MRSC™ And they’ll have earned the right to continue to use that title for 10 years following the successful completion of their exam.
