36th DAISY Award Winner: Susana Rangel, RN, CVRN-BC

August 7, 2023 — Main 4 West Nurse Susana Rangel, RN, CVRN-BC is the 36th HMSL recipient of the DAISY award. She was selected out of 95 nurses and received two nominations for her extraordinary care. Here is what they said about her:

  • She was very helpful and with great care helped my elder to not get another unnecessary hurtful “stick” to her arm of not being forced to have an IV. When she offered a resolution and came up with an alternative to her “Iron” infusion and took great care in explaining to my mother her many moments of nursing care before discharge in a very loving and patient manner. She was very attentive and educated us all in a good way to take care of her when she was being released!
  • I was admitted to the ER at HMSL on January 23, 2023, exhibiting extreme dizziness and balance issues. It was soon determined these symptoms were due to dangerously low sodium levels. From the beginning of my transfer to the 4th floor, this nurse made me feel that my successful recovery was her personal mission. Though she had a full patient load during my stay, one would not have known it from her dedicated attention to my needs. There was never a wait for the all-important saline bag replacements. Each day she gave me a printout of the results from the blood she had drawn so painlessly the day(s) before, and she always optimistically pointed out to me how my sodium levels were rising more each time. It was always her who encouraged me to be up and walking, though slowly with a walker and belt at first, because of my dizziness/balance issues. She even walked me the first day to observe my gait and to praise me for admittedly short, wobble distance I was able to cover! I was very aware of, and grateful for her advocacy on my behalf for all things related to my care. From speaking kindly to making sure her team performed as quickly and efficiently for me as she did, to immediately notifying a minister to come to my room when I requested one, to taking it upon herself to find the person responsible for answering insurance questions I mentioned that I had and to also doing her best to have a doctor see me at my request. She was a friendly and comforting presence for my worried wife as well. She was a wonder! I have no doubt that she was just attentive to the many other patients she was caring for during my stay, and I am sure each felt as grateful and fortunate as I. How she did it all, while seemingly calm and unhurried, is beyond me! I am also sure that they would agree she richly deserves to be a Daisy Award honoree. You might feel the above skills I identified are expected of all nurses, but her performance levels were exceptional. She deserves to be rewarded for that. I firmly believe that it was her kind, professional, efficient, dedicated care that contributed to my successful recovery and minimized the length of my stay at HMSL. I will always be grateful to her. She is a remarkable asset to your hospital.

Susana was surprised by her entire family and her team at Main 4 West, who celebrated her along with senior leadership and other hospital employees. DAISY Award honorees personify Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s remarkable patient experience. These nurses consistently demonstrate excellence through their clinical expertise and extraordinary compassionate care, and they are recognized as outstanding role models in our nursing community.

Thank you and congratulations, Susana!
