Please read the below email about workplace safety from Houston Methodist President and CEO, Dr. Marc Boom:
JUNE 6, 2022 — Many of you have seen the headlines about publicly violent attacks – most recently, the shooting at a Tulsa hospital last week, and then stabbings at an Encino, California hospital on Friday. I know this news is causing concern about workplace safety, especially after the horrific tragedy in Uvalde. I want to reassure you all that we have strong security measures in place to protect our employees, physicians, patients and visitors.
We are heightening security, so you may see more public safety officers at your campuses. The public safety department runs security command centers where our teams monitor security cameras and coordinate operations. We collaborate closely with local law enforcement at each of our hospitals, and you’ve probably seen uniformed officers on campus. We have a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program and Threat Assessment Teams that actively address and mitigate reported threats. In the coming weeks, we will be rolling out virtual reality and augmented reality training focused on active shooter situations. In addition, the public safety department will be offering CRASE trainings (Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events) across the system. As always, please report any suspicious activity, security concern or suggestion to your entity public safety department.
I share this not to alarm you, but to reassure you that your safety is our top priority. Each of you plays a role in caring for our patients, and your safety is our top priority. As I said after the Uvalde tragedy, it is during these times when we must be a work family and lean on each other for support, comfort each other as we share our grief, and care for each other as we would our own families.
Thank you for all you do.
