On May 26, many of our Buddhist colleagues will observe a major festival, Vesak or Buddha Day. This is the commemoration of the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha. Buddha day is observed on two levels: On one hand, it’s a celebratory occasion, much like Christmas, when our Buddhist colleagues celebrate the appearance of Enlightenment in the world. At the same time, it is a somber and dignified occasion remembering the Buddha’s death. Common practices on this day include visiting the temple and doing special good deeds. An appropriate greeting for this day is, “It’s Buddha Day—a wondrous day!”
Because of our diverse employee population at Houston Methodist, Spiritual Care and HR share information about holidays and religious observances from many groups so that you can know more about your co-workers’ observances.
