Did You Know: Employee Resource Groups Are Booming
Membership in the 10 Houston Methodist employee resource groups (ERGs) now stands at more than 2,100 employees! Many of your team members have discovered that these voluntary, employee-created and led groups are a great, informal way to meet up with colleagues who share common interests or backgrounds, or want to learn more about the cultural traditions of their co-workers.
Employees across the system can join any ERG they identify with or would like to learn more about and support. You can also start a new group! To learn more, text “ERG” to 45991, or contact Nazia Imrose at nimrose2@houstonmethodist.org.
Congratulations Scholars!
Eleven talented college students seeking careers in health care recently completed the second annual Houston Methodist DEI Summer Scholarship Program. The students gained hands-on, non-clinical experience in a variety of HM departments during the program that also included professional development and networking opportunities. The scholars were (front row, left to right) Antonia Hunt, Shelby Brooks, Rachel Brown, Heavyn Green, Ayomide Ayodele and LeAndria Jackson. (Standing, left to right) Ezekiel Olaiye, Jordan Nelson, Kiona Newsome, Joseph Armstrong and Willie Burnett.
We would like to thank all of the preceptors and professional development guest speakers for helping to make the program meaningful for the scholars.
We are already looking forward to the 2024 scholarship program, scheduled to begin in May 2024. For more information, contact deisummerscholar@houstonmethodist.org.
Enjoy Your DEI Personal Day
Even as the summer vacation season winds down, there is still time to use your 2023 DEI Personal Day PTO hours. Eligible employees may use their DEI PTO hours to celebrate days that are special to them or other members of their faith, race, nationality or anything else that makes them unique.
Just like any other time off request, you will need to request and be approved for the time off and follow your departmental guidelines for requesting PTO.
Unlike standard PTO, the hours do not roll over to the next year, so don’t forget to use your personal day before the last day of the final pay period of 2023, which is December 16, 2023. For more details, see HR Policy 72.
We would love to see how you spend your DEI Personal Day this year so we can share with your colleagues in upcoming editions of the DEI Corner. Please forward photos of you enjoying your DEI Personal Day to theofficeofdei@houstonmethodist.org.
World Humanitarian Day Observed on August 19
Established in 2008 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Humanitarian Day honors the thousands of volunteers, professionals and crisis-affected people who deliver urgent health care, shelter, food, protection, water and hope for survival. It seeks to bring together contributors across the worldwide humanitarian system to advocate for survival, well-being and dignity for people affected by crises and for the safety and security of aid workers. The date commemorates the August 19, 2003 bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq that killed 22 humanitarian aid workers.
