Christmas Reflection
As millions of people around the world prepare to celebrate Christmas Day on Sunday, Rev. Collin Powell, MDiv, BCC, chaplain at HMH, offers his personal reflection on the holiday.
“Tradition is a guide and not a jailer” – W. Somerset Maugham
“On the day after Thanksgiving, every year for as long as I can remember, my family and I would go to a tree farm to cut down a live evergreen tree. For the next several weeks, the smell of pine filling our house would remind us that Christmas was near.
“On Christmas Eve, we went to church to attend a candlelight service, singing “Silent Night” as the lights in the sanctuary dimmed and the flickering candles lit the faces of all those in attendance. On Christmas morning, we woke early to travel to my grandparents’ home to open our gifts with various family members filling the house.
“Over the years, all of these traditions that I have continued with my own children changed in ways both small and large. Between tree farms closing, changing churches and family members passing away, this year looks very different, but it still has a comforting and familiar feel.
“We cling to traditions to give us a sense of belonging; a connection to our past that shaped us and that reminds us of where we came from. As each year passes and things change, my children gain traditions that may be new to me, but that may well become the traditions they pass on to their children—doing things the way “we always used to do.”
