Did You Know ?
Human Rights Day, is observed on December 10, the date in 1948 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). The landmark document proclaims the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being. This year’s Human Rights Day theme is “Dignity, Freedom and Justice for All.” Available in more than 500 languages, the UN states the UDHR is the most translated document in the world. Since the passage of the UDHR, human rights have become more recognized across the globe, with the document serving as a foundation to expand human rights protections that now focus on vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants.
Use DEI Personal Day Before Dec.17
Jane Scott, administrative specialist, pharmacy informatics at HMH, (second row, third from right), used her DEI Personal Day in October to attend her high school reunion in Tulsa, OK. The reunion honored deceased classmates, including one whose grandmother survived the Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921; one of the worst incidents of racial violence in U.S. history, but one that was largely ignored in history studies for decades. Scott and several classmates visited Tulsa’s Greenwood Rising History Center, dedicated to telling the story of the massacre.
HM employees can use DEI Personal Day hours for any reason to celebrate days that are special to them or other members of their faith, race, nationality or anything else that makes them unique. Unlike PTO, the hours do not roll over to the next year, so if you have not yet used your PTO day, don’t forget to schedule it before Saturday, December 17.
Please note that employees who moved to a benefits eligible status or were hired after July 1, 2022 will not be eligible for a DEI day until 2023. For more details, see HR Policy 72.
We would love to see how you’ve spent your DEI Personal Day. Please forward photos of you enjoying your DEI Personal Day to theofficeofdei@houstonmethodist.org.

Global Diversity Awareness Month Fashion Showcases Photos
In addition to being loads of fun, the “Fashions From Around the World Showcases” held systemwide in October and November, provided an opportunity for staff to model cultural attire. Several showcases offered foods representing specific regions of the world. Click here to view an album with photos from each showcase.
