Series: DEI Toolkit Helps Build Stronger Teams
The DEI Toolkit provides resources to help you and your team continue the conversation around diversity, equity and inclusion topics to help create a culture of inclusion across Houston Methodist. Resources include articles and research documents, links to podcasts and Ted Talks, books and publications, a glossary of DEI terms and activities to help build stronger, more cohesive teams.
Throughout July, the DEI Corner will feature links to activities that teams can participate in designed to break down barriers in communication and understanding.
This week we feature “Privilege for Sale”. This activity is designed to acknowledge and investigate privilege. The purpose is to provide an opportunity for participants to empathically connect and reflect on the experience of having (or not having) privilege.

Honoring the Legacy of Nelson Mandela
In 2009, the United Nations designated July 18, South African civil rights leader and longtime political prisoner Nelson Mandela’s birthday, as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of his dedication to the service of humanity, race relations, gender equality, protection of human rights and promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.
In 1994, Mandela became South Africa’s first democratically elected President. After leaving office in 1999, the Nelson Mandela Foundation was established to provide a platform for a variety of charitable endeavors ranging from building schools and efforts to improve education in rural areas to HIV/AIDS programs.
Nelson Mandela International Day is intended to inspire us all to change the world for the better by making a difference in our community. Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, died in 2013 at age 95.
