Remembering a Civil Rights Icon
December 1 is recognized in many regions, including Texas, as Rosa Parks Day. February 4, Parks’ birthday, is also recognized in some areas. The December date commemorates the date in 1955 when Parks was arrested in Montgomery, AL for refusing give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. This act violated the laws of racial segregation, or Jim Crow Laws, that were in force at the time. Parks challenged the arrest, triggering a boycott of the city’s bus system led by numerous civil rights activists, including Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. After a 381-day boycott, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the segregation laws violated the U.S. Constitution. Her actions are credited with providing a spark to the nascent civil rights movement.
