Remembering a Civil Rights Icon
December 1 is recognized in many regions, including Texas, as Rosa Parks Day. February 4, Parks’ birthday, is also recognized in some areas. The December date commemorates the date in 1955 when Parks was arrested in Montgomery, AL for refusing give up her seat on a city bus to a white passenger. This act violated the laws of racial segregation, or Jim Crow Laws, that were in force at the time. Parks challenged the arrest, triggering a boycott of the city’s bus system led by numerous civil rights activists, including Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. After a 381-day boycott, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the segregation laws violated the U.S. Constitution. Her actions are credited with providing a spark to the nascent civil rights movement.

Spice Up Your Holiday Cooking

The DEI Around the World Cookbook is now available in the DEI Toolkit just in time for the holidays. The cookbook celebrates the diverse cultural backgrounds of Houston Methodist employees, who submitted recipes that are categorized into four sections: appetizers, entrees, desserts and miscellaneous.

Global Diversity Awareness Month Fashion Showcases
Thanks to everyone who participated in the systemwide “Fashions From Around the World Showcases” in October and November. The celebrations of diversity featured employees modeling cultural attire, along with tables offering regional food samples and information. Click here to view an album with photos from each showcase.
