Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-October 15) celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was expanded in 1988 to its current 30-day period. September 15 is a significant date because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico (September 16) and Chile (September 18) celebrate their independence days during this time. Día de la Raza, or “Race Day,” is observed on October 12 each year to recognize the cultural fusion of indigenous America and Spanish heritage. The day is generally observed as a national holiday in Latin American countries and communities.

Join the Movement to Dismantle Racism
The United Nations (UN) General Assembly has designated September 21 each year as International Day of Peace in an effort to encourage working together to strengthen the ideals of global peace. Established in 1981 as a day to celebrate non-violence and equality, this year’s theme is “End Racism: Build Peace.” The designation encourages everyone to play a role in fostering peace by dismantling racism through support of movements for equality and human rights and speaking out against hate speech in all its forms.
