In June we announced that Houston Methodist will add a special Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) personal day in 2022. Employees will see the hours awarded in the first pay period of 2022 for their full accrual.
How are DEI personal day hours different from other paid time off?
The DEI personal day hours must be used in the year earned and do not roll over to the next year. If an employee terminates employment or changes status from benefits-eligible to non-benefits eligible, he or she will not receive a payout for the DEI personal day. You also cannot sell the DEI personal day during Houston Methodist PTO Sell periods.
Does everyone get eight hours of DEI personal time each January?
DEI personal day hours are based on the employee’s weekly standard hours and benefits eligibility status in effect during the pay period that includes Jan. 1. Newly benefit eligible employees or benefit eligible employees hired on or before July 1 will get the full annual accrual. Anyone moving to a benefit-eligible status or hired after July 1 will not accrue until the following January.
How can I use the DEI personal day hours?
All eligible employees will be able to use this day off to celebrate days that are special to them and other members of their faith, race, nationality or anything else that makes them unique. The day can be used for any reason and in combination with another PTO request. There are no restrictions. Just like any other time off request, employees will need to request and be approved for the time off. Employees should follow the departmental guidelines for requesting PTO.
Examples of when employees might use this personal day include: Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Eid-al-Fitr; Pride Month; Juneteenth; Rosh Hashanah; Veterans Day or International Day of Persons with Disabilities, just to name a few.
