In honor of Donate Life Month, we celebrate the life and medical contributions of Dr. Sherilyn Gordon-Burroughs.
Dr. Gordon-Burroughs was a transplant surgeon at the Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center and Associate Professor of Surgery at The Methodist Hospital, where she served as the first physician Designated Institutional Official and the Residency Director for the Department of Surgery. She was also the Assistant Dean, Graduate Medical Education, at Texas A&M Health Science Center.
“Visionary” was often a word used to describe her. She was one of only a handful of black female surgeons in the nation. She also held leadership roles with the American College of Surgeons and American Society of Transplant Surgeons. At the time of her death she was Chair of the Legislative Committee for the American Society of Transplant Surgeons and was pursuing several patient and donor-centered initiatives in the U.S. House of Representative that would greatly improve patient and donor care and experience.
We want to celebrate with you for all awareness months and holidays. Please email theofficeofdei@houstonmethodist.org if we have regrettably overlooked any.
