Today marks the beginning of National Nurses Week around the country, followed by Hospital Week when we celebrate all health care workers. The last few years have highlighted the very special role nurses play in health care as they’ve tirelessly battled COVID-19 through multiple surges. Even though nurses have always been valued for the amazing work they do, the pandemic further showcased just how much we rely on their unique skills and compassion.
As a physician, I have always realized the critical role that nurses play in health care. It would be impossible to lead medicine if we didn’t have one of the best nursing staffs in the world to count on.
This Sunday, we begin another important week-long celebration – Hospital Week. This recognition was established to celebrate our hospitals and hospital workers. While it’s wonderful to be recognized for your work and praised by the community, we can never forget that we’ve all answered a sacred calling to work in health care. It is a blessing to be given the opportunity to serve the ill in their moment of need as well as to play a pivotal role in keeping our community safe and healthy.
Whether you work at the bedside, the bench or at a desk, please accept my deep gratitude for everything you do on behalf of our patients. It’s your commitment to offering our patients unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation that has made Houston Methodist one of the top hospital systems in the country.
I hope all of you enjoy the activities planned for these two celebrations. You deserve it!
