February marks the Lunar New Year, an important traditional holiday for our colleagues whose ancestry is rooted in Asia. It will be marked with lantern parades, festivals and parties ringing in the Year of the Ox, according to the traditional 12-year cycle. The celebrations usually begin the day before the new year (Feb. 12) and continue until the Lantern Festival on Feb. 26.
Preparations for the Lunar New Year often begin long before the actual day arrives. Many households complete a particularly careful cleaning before the New Year, sweeping away any bad luck that might yet remain. Other common rituals include fireworks, large family dinners, putting up red decorations, giving gifts of money in red envelopes and wearing red clothing.
Because of our diverse employee population at Houston Methodist, Spiritual Care and HR share information about holidays and religious observances from many groups so that you can know more about your co-workers’ observances. Click here to see a full list of interfaith holidays for 2021 and 2022.
