Magnet Announcement

Monday, August 2nd was not just another Magnet Monday.

After four years of intensive preparation, writing, coordination and effort, our nursing leaders, led by our Chief Nursing Officer Janet Leatherwood, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, and Director of Clinical Education and Magnet, Mary Harris, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, submitted documents to the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) as part of the credentialing process for our hospital’s Magnet re-designation.

The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the ANCC to recognize health care organizations that provide an elevated standard of nursing and interprofessional excellence.

Magnet is a significant motivational force in our pursuit of Performance Excellence. The four components of Performance Excellence – Strategy Creation, Strategic Planning, Strategy Execution and Leadership Development – complement Magnet’s emphasis on leadership, scientific discovery, and dissemination and implementation of new knowledge.

The Magnet domains of Transformational Leadership, Structural Empowerment, Exemplary Professional Practice, and New Knowledge, Innovations and Improvements provide the framework for HMSL to submit sources of evidence that demonstrate a continued culture of excellence and innovation in nursing.

A number of Magnet narratives submitted focus on or involve aspects of Performance Excellence.

  • Strategy creation, planning and execution – Chief Nursing Officer Janet Leatherwood’s leadership and vision led to a strategic organizational change by creating the HMSL Palliative Care Service to meet the needs of patients diagnosed with life-altering illnesses.
  • Leadership development – examples of mentoring and succession planning activities; development of the Wound Treatment Associate Program, and kaizens provide examples of leadership development at HMSL.

This week, we received word that the appraisers have completed the HMSL Organizational Overview documents and are moving forward with the rest of our submission.

Congratulations to all of you and to our hospital for cultivating a Magnet culture of excellence that produced an abundance of Magnet narrative examples!
