March 11, 2019: What are your thoughts about feedback? Does feedback have value? Does it matter how and where feedback is delivered?
If we stop and think about it, we are daily inundated with feedback. Our cars give us feedback when our tires are low or the gas tank is almost empty. Our bank accounts give us feedback when we need to add more money to them.
Patients and families give us feedback about their experience and care. Some patients take the time to write a personal thank you note or nominate a nurse or interprofessional for a DAiSY or STAR award. Some make a phone call or write a letter to senior leadership expressing their gratitude to staff for saving their life or the life of a loved one.
This feedback is humbling, encouraging, and easy to receive. What happens when the feedback isn’t so great? Are we just as grateful that the person took the time to tell us where we could do better? Are we willing to listen without judgment and excuse making to find the lesson we need to learn?
I think feedback is gold. Without it, we would have a hard time navigating our course and keeping aligned with our true north.
The next two weeks we will discuss some simple feedback skills we can all use to provide feedback to one another so we can continue our pursuit towards excellence. I am grateful for all that you do to make HMSL one of the best places to serve in Fort Bend and surrounding counties!
