The Inpatient Rehabilitation team is actively involved in many of the house-wide shared governance councils. This week, we are featuring our Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy partners.
What are some of the Inpatient Rehab team’s accomplishments?
- Maria Jocela Dinh completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)
- Ma Rodelyn Berdin was selected for the Global Health Hackathon
- The Center for Performing Arts in Medicine (CPAM) selected to display Ma Rodelyn Berdin’s photo
- Provide dual joint group therapy sessions
- Hosted monthly Texas Physical Therapy Association (TPTA) district meetings remotely for HMSL staff and other PT/PTAs in the area
- Formed a committee to upgrade clinical goals for PT and PTA students. 20 students from 9 different schools did inpatient clinical at HMSL in 2017.
- Began collecting data for the Joint Program
- Several Physical Therapists participated in PT Day of Service at East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry
- Continue to partner with the ICU team to make progress with the ABCDEF bundle. During February 2018 Physical Therapy walked a ventilated patient for the first time at HMSL.
- Various Rehab team members serve on the Safety, Patient Satisfaction, No Harm, Workplace Environment, Delirium and Magnet councils.
How does the team partner with nurses and other interprofessionals to provide unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation?
- Participated in the Main 5E/Main 5W hand hygiene pilot
- Attend Care Coordination Rounds for Main 6E and Main 6 West and other units as needed
- Attend the Real-Time Demand Capacity (RTDC) huddle each morning at 9AM
- Provided training to the Main 4 West staff on cardiac patient mobility
- Partner with the Main 6E staff on the Joint Program
- Partner with Brazos 5 to coordinate care for observation patients
- Speech therapists partner with Radiology to do swallow evaluations
- PT/OT team partners with Spine Center and HMOSM to ensure coverage
- Purchased FEES (flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing) System and 3 Speech Pathologists attended training
How does the team have a voice in their practice?
- Team members are responsible for the patient care in their units and work to keep current with best practices
- Team members make recommendations for equipment purchases
- Team members partner with the Clinical Practice Council to ensure best practices
- Team members attend and actively participate in staff meetings
- Team atmosphere is collaborative
- Manager has an open door policy and encourages and appreciates team input
- Manager rounding on employees
