March 16, 2020: Meet the Magnet Champion Leadership Team! Maria Gordon, BSN, RN, CCRN, Brazos Medical ICU Charge Nurse and RN lll, Julie Pickle, PT, MS, Inpatient Rehab Manager, and Victoria Contreras, Patient Liaison. Here’s what they have to say about being a Magnet Champion and leader.
Victoria: “Being a Magnet champion is important to me because while my role in the hospital is not clinical, it allows me to be more connected with the clinical side of operations. I can share that knowledge with my co-workers, so we can impact the way we provide patient and family-centered care. I appreciate that I am surrounded by such a vibrant, creative, and diverse group of Magnet champions and leaders that support and exemplify the 14 forces of Magnetism and allow me to collaborate on how together we can create a culture of excellence.
Julie: “I was pleased to be involved as we began our Magnet Journey a few years ago. Right away it became evident that Magnet is all about excellence, not just for nursing matters, but for all that we do to serve our patients and our community. As a Magnet champion, I was challenged to think about what excellence looks like in my department. Every month the Magnet champions are offered training and challenged to shared ideas and work with members of their units to continue the quest for excellence. I am very proud to be a part of a Magnet hospital, our hospital, Houston Methodist Sugar Land!
Maria: I’ve had the great opportunity to be a member of the Magnet Champion steering committee for four and a half years (and hopefully more). Being the Magnet Champion chair has opened my eyes and broadened my perspective to put meaning and purpose into my collaboration with the ICU staff, HMSL leadership, and of course the patients and families we serve in our community to always to the right thing. Being the chair gives me an opportunity to use my creativity in leading various HMSL Magnet events, such as Magnet Thanks and Giving. While I am able, mind, body, and spirit, I will continue this journey and I invite everyone to tag along as we continue to make a difference.
