January 21, 2019 – There are four primary shared governance principles:
• partnership,
• equity,
• accountability and
• ownership
When these principles are owned by the team, an empowered work environment is created.
Let’s focus on partnership and equity this week.
Partnership links healthcare providers and patents along all points of the continuum and is essential to building relationships. All staff are involved in processes and decisions and each member has a key role in fulfilling the mission, vision and values of the hospital. A partnership requires excellent collaboration, care coordination and communication among all the stakeholders, including nursing, interprofessionals, patients, families and the community.
Equity is the foundation and measure of value and helps maintain a focus on services, patients and staff. Equity says no one role is more important than the other. Although equity is not synonymous with equality in terms of scope of practice, knowledge, authority or responsibility, it does mean that each team member is essential to providing safe, effective care.
How would you describe your partnerships with your co-workers and the HMSL team? Does everyone have a voice in how they provide patient and family-centered care, even if they don’t provide patient care?
