October 22, 2018 – Team Formation (Part 2)
Bruce Tuckman introduced a model describing the stages of group development. Team Forming, Storming & Norming were discussed last week. The last two stages, Performing and Adjourning are described here. A Performing team is motivated and strategic. This team understands the “why” behind their work and keeps their eyes on the goal(s) at hand. Leaders of Performing teams focus on helping the team members develop professionally and demonstrate increased competence. Performing teams trust each other and this increases the speed at which the team can reach their accomplishments.
The final group development stage, Adjourning, may or may not happen, depending on what type of team is involved. When goals are reached, the team may disband. It’s important for the team to plan a time to evaluate their progress and recognize participation and achievements.
Have you ever been a part of a Performing Team? What was your team able to accomplish? What did you contribute?
