Oncology Nursing Month
According to the Oncology Nursing Society, this specialty seeks to reduce the risks, incidence, and burden of cancer by encouraging healthy lifestyles, promoting early detection, improving the management of cancer symptoms and side effects throughout the disease trajectory, and leading the coordination of complex care needs.
Here at HMSL, oncology nurses may work in a variety of settings such as:
- Medical oncology, where they deliver chemotherapy/biotherapy and immunotherapy treatments
- Radiation oncology, where they monitor patients on a weekly basis to ensure proper side effect management
- Inpatient unit (4 East) where neutropenic patients may be hospitalized
- Breast Care Center, which assists patients during breast biopsies.
- Navigation, which directs them to all of these settings
Regardless of where they work, oncology nurses educate patients throughout their cancer journey, and advocate for patients at risk for the development of cancer or patients who have cancer.
Better Hearing & Speech Month
Each May, Better Hearing & Speech Month (BHSM) provides an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders and the role of ASHA members in providing life-altering treatment.
This year’s theme is “Connecting People.”
Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s patients are served by five inpatient speech language pathologists (SLPs). HMSL also has two SLPs who service outpatients at our Neuroscience and Spine Center.
All of our SLPs provide excellent care in the assessment and treatment of speech, language, cognitive-communication issues, and swallowing disorders.
Our SLPs are an important part of our rehabilitation team. We celebrate you and thank you for your commitment to HMSL and to our patients and families.
Critical Care Awareness Month
May is National Critical Care Awareness and Recognition Month. According to the Society of Critical Care Medicine, critical care is medical care for patients whose illness requires close, constant watch by a team of specially trained caregivers. Most critical care takes place in an intensive care unit or a trauma center, according to the society.
This month, you are encouraged to use the hashtag #blueICU to celebrate the work your colleagues in this profession are doing, and to wear blue on Friday May 20
Neurosciences Nurses Week
May 15 – 21 is Neurosciences Nurses Week. It is celebrated during the third week of May each year. During this special week, we pay tribute to all nurses who care for patients experiencing neurological diseases and disorders.
