In July 2020, we distributed small posters for employees to respond how they had grown over the year. The responses were collected and became these butterflies created by an artist in partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
The text on the plexiglass next to the butterfly says the below:
The butterfly before you shows the metamorphosis of how Houston Methodist grew unified, compassionate, and strong in 2020. The Center for Performing Arts Medicine aimed to create an artistic time capsule of that growth while providing a creative outlet for employees to celebrate and express the many ways in which they had grown. Metamorphosis is inspired by the day-to-day heroicism of the Houston Methodist community and artwork from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Employees were prompted to respond to, ‘how have you grown this year?’ by adding their growth word to a community poster. The posters were filled with employees’ drawing, writings, and collages expressing their growth. Some were filled with joy while others shared the losses and challenges of the year. From the thousands of responses themes of tolerance, endurance, and resiliency shone through just as the gems of the Tiffany clips shone through the rough earth to become priceless works of art. The responses were summed up and encapsulated in this stained-glass butterfly handcrafted by local artist, Melissa Aytenfisu. As you view this artwork, take a moment to reflect on the words of hope and strength from Houston Methodist employees and watch as the light resiliently shines through the butterfly, reflecting the enduring spirit of the Houston Methodist community.
Karen Castellanos from Food and Nutrition Services was recognized by the system for her creative poster submitted on behalf of her team. Congratulations!
The butterfly can be seen in our Sweetwater Pavilion near the chapel.
