National Hispanic Heritage Month is from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, celebrating the history, culture and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period.
The day of Sept. 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, 18 and 21, respectively.
The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion pays tribute to generations of Hispanic Americans who have influenced and enriched our nation and society. This week we feature Dr. Luz A. Venta.
Dr. Luz A. Venta was born in Cuba. She is the Medical Director of the Methodist Breast Center and founding member of the breast imaging section. Since 1994, she has dedicated her career to women’s health by advancing the field of breast cancer detection through breast imaging and digital mammography. In 2003, she introduced breast MRI to The Methodist Hospital prior to the American Cancer Society’s acknowledgment of it as a powerful tool in the detection of breast cancer.
Dr. Venta’s impact in women’s health care goes beyond her personal clinical practice. She has extensive experience in breast cancer research, over 200 published articles, and has lectured both nationally and internationally on four continents.
She has been named a fellow of the Society of Breast Imaging for her contributions to the field of breast cancer research.
