AUGUST 23, 2022 — Mary Thottasseri was announced as the DAISY Award recipient for Q4 of 2021. It was presented on August 23, 2022. Mary works in 6 West and was nominated by two different patients. This is what they had to say about her:
“Thank you for caring for my dear mother the last few hours of her life. Mom stopped breathing a little after 6 a.m. on Monday, August 23, her heart finally gave out. Many thanks to the entire staff who allowed my stepdad, my daughter and me to stay with mom from Saturday to her passing on Monday. We had a lovely visit and remembered on Saturday night where mom said she had hoped to leave this earth looking good and feeling good. At 5:30 a.m. mom received yet another dose of sedative, she had been struggling to breathe for hours and my prayer had been for God to just take her and end the struggle. Soon you and another nurse arrived to adjust mom in the bed and make her more comfortable. My daughter was resistant as we knew moving her would be painful and most likely fatal. I gave you consent. You very gently and carefully bathed mom and changed gown, sheets and straightened the bedding. After you left the room, my dad realized mom had stopped breathing! I believe whole heartily that God sent you to our room to help him end mom’s struggle and to help her look well and feel good. May God bless you and your family as mightily as you blessed us. Thank you for your kindness and for treating Mom with dignity and respect. Forever grateful.”
“She took the time to explain the medication I was taking. She was very patient and kind. She made my stay less stressful and helped me focus on getting healthy.”
Mary was surprised by a visit from her husband and two sons.
