MARCH 10, 2022 — Please read the email below from Dr. Marc Boom, President and CEO of Houston Methodist, explaining ways you can help support Ukraine:
“As we continue to hear disturbing news about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it’s easy to feel helpless all the way around the world in Houston. I know many of you have joined me in praying for peace and the people of Ukraine as they fight for their freedom and their lives. While our prayers are certainly a powerful tool, there are other ways we can stand with the people of Ukraine.
Locally, in a sign of solidarity, two of our hospital buildings are lit up in yellow and blue to show our support. Although we’d like to light up every Houston Methodist building to show our support, only these two have this capability. We hope this simple gesture will show others in the community that we stand against this unwarranted invasion. We will continue to light these buildings through March. Houston Methodist is also working with the U.S. Cooperative for International Patient Programs (USCIPP) to help arrange for donations of much-needed medication. We are also donating vital medical equipment and supplies through Medical Bridges.
There are many ways you also can help as individuals. A few worthwhile organizations assisting Ukraine include: United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR); the International Red Cross; UNICEF; CARE International; The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR); and Voices of Children Foundation. Please consider learning more about these organizations’ work in Ukraine by clicking these links and perhaps offering financial support. They are all doing their part for the people of Ukraine during this very difficult time. I often talk about living our I CARE values outside of our hospital walls. This is a wonderful opportunity to show compassion for the millions of Ukrainians who continue to suffer through no fault of their own.
It may feel hopeless as we stand on the sidelines watching this conflict unfold, but we do have it in our power to show our support for the people of Ukraine. If you are feeling overwhelmed by the situation, I encourage you to visit our Mental Health Options page to find the necessary resources to speak to someone about your feelings. It’s important that we continue taking care of ourselves even during these types of upsetting world events.
Please continue to join me in prayer for peace and an end to this bloody conflict. It’s imperative that we do not forget or idly stand by as Ukraine continues to suffer this way.”
