Shelby Brooks – DEI Summer Scholarship Program
I was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. I currently attend Prairie View A&M University as a junior biology major and am an Honor Roll Student. I’m also involved in Gold Member’s Club, Helpers Advancing the Lives of Others, and Mentoring Incoming Freshman. I am a 2023 DEI Summer Scholar Intern working to pursue my dreams in medicine. My goal is to one day become a dermatologist and have my own practice. According to the National Medical Association, black doctors make up only 5.7% of the medical field. I aspire to open doors for people of color and to show them we can achieve anything if we set our mind to it! I am grateful to the Houston Methodist Community for giving me the opportunity to work under such an incredible staff. My preceptors for the program are Norma Yeverino, Human Resource Director and Selina Garcia, Senior Project Manager. I look forward to getting a chance to meet the employees and learn more about health care during my time at HMSL!
“Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” – Barack Obama
DEI Summer Scholarship Program Begins
The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion began the second year of the Houston Methodist DEI Summer Scholarship Program on May 30 by welcoming 12 talented college students. The number of students in this year’s cohort is double that of the inaugural year in 2022. Additionally, the program expands to include three community hospitals. The program helps prepare students for a career in health care through hands-on experience in non-clinical positions in a variety of departments, in addition to professional development sessions and mentoring activities. This year’s scholars are (back row, from left) Willie Burnett, Ezekiel Olaiye, Valerie Ige and Jordan Nelson. (Front row, from left) Ayomide Ayodele, Kiona Newsome, Shelby Brooks (HMSL), Joseph Armstrong, Rachel Brown, LeAndria Jackson, Heavyn Green and Antonia Hunt. The program runs through August 4, 2023.
