New Way to Contact Nurses

Contacting Inpatient Nurses − Stay HIPAA-Safe

On Monday, April 15, new Vocera badges will allow hands-free communication for inpatient nurses at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

The badges replace the current Cisco phones and bring a new requirement to remember your onstage behaviors when calling any inpatient HMSL nurse.

Expect That You’re Always on Speaker

  • When calling, first ask: “Am I on speaker?”
  • If your colleague responds “Yes,” wait for confirmation that it’s safe to speak before discussing HIPAA-protected information.
  • Nurse can take it off speaker as needed, or transfer the call to a phone.

Vocera Badges − Easier for Nurses

  • Lightweight, wearable, allows hands-free communication.
  • Voice-controlled, one-button operation.
  • No need to remember phone numbers – placing a call is as easy as saying:
    • “Call Jane Smith”
    • “Call ED charge nurse”

New, Easier Way to Call Anyone − #8

“Hey, Siri.” It will be almost that easy to call any HMSL employee or department when a new voice-activated system launches Monday, April 15.

Here’s What’s New

  • From any desk phone, just tap #8 and speak. It works for clinical and nonclinical areas.
    • “Call Jane Smith”
    • “Call ED charge nurse”
    • “Call lab”
    • “Call gift shop”
  • From your smartphone, dial 281.737.0087. You’ll hear a command to enter an extension or say the name (first and last) of the person you’re calling.
  • To transfer a call, say “Transfer call,” say the person/department name and tap #8.

Questions?

  • Ask your manager for your team’s super-user.
  • IT Help Desk Self-Service, ask for the MDI team.

When I dial 281-737-0087 via a landline and says “Call Blood Bank”, it rerouted my phone call to Willowbrook Methodist Blood Bank instead.
Likewise, when I say “Call Lab”, it rerouted my phone call to Willowbrook Methodist Lab as well.

What is the right way to call the different hostpial labs in the Methodist system?
